What Fashion to Expect in Spring 2014

The New Fashion Designs –> An Opportunity to Expand your Personal Style

New York always seems so energetic during fashion week.  Just walking a few blocks to grab something to eat can be quite an experience in fashion. The city is packed with fashion forward good-looking people stepping out of cabs like they’re in some Photoshop’d Dolce & Gabbana Ad…. And now that Paris has also finished up their fashion week, the dust has settled and this is when I start to get excited about how well my color forecasting matches up with the biggest names in fashion.

I actually pay the most attention to 3 elements of the newest fashion designs. Color, Texture, and Patterns.  Getting to see the different cuts and lines is great too, but if you know me at all then you know color will come before anything else!  As far as I can tell spring and summer are going to be really cool especially if you’re a big fan of #edgy metallics, not just your traditional silver or gold tones but hot iridescent colors like purple, pink, green and blue.

Another element that stood out on the runways in both NYC and Paris  was the use of ruffles.  I have to say that I am a big fan, it adds so much texture to a garment.  Ruffles take an otherwise conservative look and gives it a downtown edge. It will transition well from a day spent in meetings or at the office to a #fun (maybe I’ll get into a little trouble) evening out! Look for elegant dresses like the photo below or you can always pair a solid color ruffled top with your favorite designer jeans and heels.  The looks is sexy, playful and comfortable!

There are also a lot of designers using lace in their 2014 spring collections. Lace is such a #sexy texture, the pattern always looks so intricate and the “peekaboo” of skin is something that adds a flirtatious aspect.  Lauren Parker Accessories magazine said it best in regards to all the skin being shown through so many lace designs “The result was never vulgar, just pretty”.  Throughout the year I have been discussing this with other bloggers and industry professionals about how art deco elements are making their way back into the fashion scene. Maybe it was the Great Gatsby Movie that revived it, at very least that couldn’t have hurt.  Nevertheless I am a huge fan of this era and have always designed my crystal jewelry collections with this style in mind!  So pairing cool accessories with this style shouldn’t be too hard.

Another notable trend to be conscious of for the spring is the Safari inspired designs… The style worn by the literal kings of the jungle is also going to be the same style worn by the kings of fashion.  Great for me, I just picked up a pair of awesome giraffe print jeans that I love.  Well maybe a giraffe isn’t actually the king of the jungle but you get the picture. Color is going to play a new and exciting role this year with animal prints, elegant and glamorous yet fun and wild!

For what I saw from the fashion weeks, Gucci, Chloe, Oscar de la Renta, Dolce & Gabbana and Alberta Ferretti were some of my favorites.  You can also check out more of the 2014 collections here.  I was really excited to see how harmonious the Jewelry collections that I designed for spring are going to be.  Great colors, glistening metallics and an art deco trend all tie in so well to my style. Here is a sneak peek of a couple of pieces that will be available mid November!

The Global Citizen Festival in NYC

Image              Image
There is no denying that New York offers some of the most amazing experiences anywhere in the world, cultural events, historical happenings, even epic shows and concerts.  This past weekend I had the good fortune of attending the Global Citizen Festival in Central Park, along with 60,000 other enthusiastic concert goers!  Going to an event at the Great Lawn in Central Park is just so picturesque and energetic.  With a huge artistically designed stage and the backdrop of the city’s skyline the setting could not have been better for listening to some of the music industries best artists perform for a sea of people here to make their voices heard about ending world poverty.

If you are wondering….the global citizen organization is essentially a group of regular people who register with the organization and donate their time to charitable organizations that work towards eliminating extreme poverty world-wide.  It’s an eye-opening cause that anyone with a heart and ambition to make our world better would be proud to call themselves a global citizen, joining the likes of Bono, Will.i.am, John Mayer, Alicia Keyes, and Stevie Wonder to name a few.
Other guests at the festival included the crown princess of Denmark, the president of Liberia and a slew of U.S. congressmen.

Kings of Leon opened the concert bringing some much-anticipated southern rock to the crowd.  The set was upbeat and energetic “Sex on Fire” and “Use Somebody” are probably to 2 most recognizable songs from their set but they did add in some new pieces from their new album (Mechanical Bull).  I have a lot of respect for this group as they are not shy about getting up and performing for a cause.  Kings of Leon also sang at The Rock for Oklahoma concert earlier this summer to which the proceeds from that show went to help victims trying to recover from the lash of tornadoes.

Alicia Keyes set up next and put on an amazing performance, switching from piano to mic throughout her set and I have to say that there is nothing like hearing “Empire State of Mind” at a show in New York.  Alicia looked great in her sexy revealing black dress and cuff bracelets on each arm.

John Mayer was up next and led off by saying that they were “just going to do our thing” and have fun with his set.  That was exactly what happened…. It was great, the sun had finally dropped and he played all the songs we know him for while adding extra guitar solos.  Although the song “Waiting for the World to Change” may have been written in for something entirely different then global poverty it was the most appropriate song for the Global Citizen Festival and sounded fantastic!

Lastly was Stevie Wonder who came out with another cause to get behind…. Gun Control.  As he educated the crowd on the idea that a blind person can legally own a gun he pointed his fingers out into the crowd like 2 guns and started shooting and asking if he got ’em.  It was a comical approach to gun laws that need to be re-thought.  His music was epic! He played hit after hit including my personal favorite… “Higher Ground”.  Even when his time had pretty much come to an end he continued to play saying “wait wait we have to play this one” and ” we can’t leave without playing this”.  Thanks Stevie for an awesome set!

All of this fun was for a great cause to end worldwide poverty and if you want information on how to become a member click here.

Stackable Rings and Multiple Rings a trend to sink your fingers into!

There are jewelry trends that are just plain classic, some that are split second fads, and then there are some that are super fun and you wonder why they ever disappeared…. “cough, cough”…. Stackable Rings!

It is so much fun and it doesn’t have to cost you a ton of money either.  For example on http://www.karencurtis.com we have stackable rings for $20 and $25.  Of course there is no limit to what you can spend but for a couple hundred bucks you can have a vast assortment of rings that you can mix and match, having countless combinations for the year.

I am going to go ahead and say there are very little limitations on what you can stack together.  Mixing metals, crystal and precious stones, lucite and traditional gold or silver…. all of these are fine.  This is a great opportunity to piece together some smaller items by your favorite designers and as long as you like all the rings you are wearing, then it will look beautiful on you.

Remember that the key to stacking is to have fun with it and change it up whenever you want!

What Celebs have jumped on board with the multiple ring thing you ask? Let see who is having more fun then everyone else accessorizing with stackable rings!

OK, So when I originally wrote this article  I threw in a picture of Miley Cyrus prior to the whole VMA public image disaster but lets keep her in here and remember what she looked like without a foam finger and before twerking with robin thicke! #Hannah Montana

If you are looking for a starting point for gathering cool rings you can always go to my website but here is a list of some of my favorite rings and links to the people in my industry that I think deserve lots of success pretty much because they rock at what they do!

1) Wendy Brandes –  Cool designs in different metals and precious stones http://wendybrandes.com/store/categories.php?category=Category/Rings

2) Michael Alexander – Always loved his creations. We have exhibited together at various shows and he definitely is a uniquist! http://www.michaelalexander.com/#!portfolio/vstc30=rings

3) David Yurman – Classic designs but great use of precious stones with elegant metal smithing http://www.davidyurman.com/shoponline/subcategory.aspx?folderId=/women/rings

How To Choose The Right Jewelry for Your Wedding

My husband and I own and design jewelry for The Karen Curtis Company in Manhattan.  I have been working with brides for over a decade and have been designing Swarovski Crystal Jewelry for over 15 years.  I thought it might be helpful  to share what I have learned over the years and having had my own wedding 2 years ago it is all very fresh in my mind from both perspectives. One thing I found out after my wedding is that you need to have jewelry that you are in love with not just satisfied with because it is going to be in every picture from your wedding, and you will be looking at that for your whole life. That being said there are 4 main things to look at when deciding on jewelry for your wedding. I have set this up beginning with the most important….. Spoiler alert:  Comfort comes last ladies we all know it hurts to be beautiful!
1) The Dress
The dress plays the biggest role, what shade is it, does it incorporate crystal trim, pearl trim etc. These little details that made you pick the dress in the first place are the same things that you want the design of you jewelry to highlight.  Is the neckline perfect for a specific size necklace? Will a bracelet help to continue a pattern around the waistline of a dress? Does your dress have gold embroidery if so then gold metal in your jewelry is fantastic….. if not then maybe silver-colored metal is more appropriate.
2) Budget
Lets face it most of us have a budget for a wedding, if you don’t then go big with diamonds, Tahitian pearls and other precious stones. Try to stick with the budget you have in mind and find jewelry designers that offer items in your range.  But remember that of all the thing you wear on the day of your wedding, the only thing you are likely to wear again is the jewelry, so take that into consideration when setting your budget.
3) Style
What is your style… most already know what that is.  If you like creative organic designs then go for it.  If you are in love with the art deco styles then that is what you were meant to wear on your big day.
4) Comfort
This kind of plays off of the style.  Being comfortable on the day of your wedding is very important.  You shouldn’t wear 4 inch heels if you are a flats kind of girl so approach your choice of jewelry the same way.  Get items that you enjoy wearing and the you are comfortable in.  If you like shoulder duster earrings then find the perfect long crystal earring for you.  If a big chunky necklace is something you always dreamed of wearing then go for it but make sure you can have fun in it.
The number 1 rule is to enjoy your day and look beautiful doing it…. Dance, Socialize, and Love with all of the people you care about in one room!

Manhattan Bride’s coverage and photography by Rick Bard showcases some of our new designs for the bride this year.  This necklace is fabulous! Layers and layers of Swarovski crystals artistically overlapping with sterling silver.  We are very excited about this new look, considering the edginess and non-symmetrical look of the bib part of it. : )  Link to http://www.karencurtis.com/bridal-jewelry/ to see more!

So I guess we feel at this point in our career, and life for that matter, we have seen a lot of what the wedding industry has to offer, especially in the New York area.  That being said my husband and I have come to agreement on what wedding professionals we feel deserve recognition for being cool, innovative, high quality, and really just provide outstanding service and products.  By no means have we scouted out everyone in the industry, but over the course of a few years we have gone to lots of weddings big and small, attended so many bridal expos, and on a personal note planned our own wedding which I feel we did a lot of research for.

Lets start by giving you some great resources for planning:

Great writing, excellent selection in the advertisements and a very cool section that highlights individual weddings.  We like this because you can see everything someone else choose, and view some photographs from their wedding that can give you an idea of what these vendors bring to the table.  Read each couples story and some of them you can associate with and maybe even get some ideas if you are looking to create a theme of some sort. This is a link to our wedding featured in the magazine! http://www.karencurtis.com/manhattan-bride-our-wedding/

– This is a pretty big publication, that highlights lots of different vendors in the industry.  They have a more national scope to them so if it is a destination wedding this could be a good starting point for the bride and groom to look through.  Cool DIY areas and tips on how to make the most of what you are going for.  Even good tips for the guys… ( seriously if any grooms are reading this blog, surprise your girl with a spa/message session a couple of days before your wedding!  Big Points, Just Saying) http://www.theknot.com/

– Also a great way to get ideas on how to make the day even more smashing.  You can read though a lot of reviews on people and venues on wedding wire… It’s a wonderful source for wedding planning! They have an incredible listing of vendors where you can view by your location and category, e.i. Jewelry, NYhttp://www.weddingwire.com/

– The one and only!  It’s kinda dreamy for a bride to walk in there with her girls to try on some gowns.  They have a huge selection and all of the staff is super friendly and eager to find the perfect dress for each bride.  “IS THIS THE ONE” is their trademark question every time you look at yourself in a mirror with a new dress.  Have fun with it and we have no doubt that you will be able to find something special for your big day.  Important to note that you need to call ahead for an appointment they get a lot of traffic. http://www.kleinfeldbridal.com/

– This place is A+.  They have a great selection of dresses that are top-notch quality.  Lesser known then the big names but that is why we find them so appealing.  It’s that couture, edgy, no one else has it feeling you get after buying your gown from these guys.  The owners/designers are Steven and Robert and we have to say that they are awesome, you couldn’t find a more helpful, friendly and stylish group to work with and lets face it, working directly with the owners of a particular company makes a girl feel special.  Don’t pass up the opportunity to try out their designs this could definitely be the place you find the perfect gown! http://www.birnbaumandbullock.com/

Other designers that I personally loved were

Ree Macra  http://www.reemacra.com/Collections/Bridal/1a525329-1da4-4094-a86e-cb86a9c72550

Monique Lhuillier  http://moniquelhuillier.com/

Just simply beautiful, both the floral designs and Maria’s personality!  She creates the most stunning arrangements and brings her A game to every events she is a part of.  It is rare to find someone who is so enthusiastic about their work and Maria is the epitome of that individual.  Great pricing for any budget as well.  She engages the bride and groom to become part of her design process, using images of her prior events as well as imaginative ways that she can create unique features for your particular wedding. She recently launched her new company and she is well worth inquiring about! http://mcninodesigns.com/ or mcninoevents@gmail.com  or 1-718-383-2424

– Special!  This is a really talented group of photographers headed by owners Lina and O.B. and they are great professional people to work with.  The style is photo journalism and it is everything you could imagine, creative, artsy, but at the same time they find a way to make it a bit traditional also.  Lets be honest, you are never going to see everything that happens at your wedding fortunately you can have this amazing team of photo “ninjas” documenting the entire event.  Before you pull the trigger on hiring your photographer make sure you look at what this company has to offer, we think they are legen…. “wait for it”…  dary!  http://www.linajang.com/

Note: Above photos are by Jang Photography

We recently attended a wedding that used this company for the night and we gotta say it was Fantastic! The dance floor was packed, the music was a good mix of modern dance and classics, we would’ve stayed till 5 a.m. dancing.  The catch is that you have to trust them when they tell you they will have the perfect band for your night.  I don’t believe you get to see them perform live and essentially they combine talented musicians catered to the type of event you want to throw.  Needless to say we witnessed this come off very well so we give a stamp of approval! http://www.hanklane.com/

You can get lost on websites and if you don’t have a good recommendation from a friend or family member then you should consider using their resources.  Located all over and every time we have visited them we have enjoyed the information.  Give them a budget and the type of vacation you want and they will steer you in the right direction.  There is also a good price insurance with the company and they will most likely match a deal if you think you can find something better.  Walk right into one of their locations and you might find the perfect spot that you didn’t know existed! http://www.libertytravel.com/

Alright that is pretty much it.  Hopefully this helps someone out as they plan their wedding.  My husband and I are young and like to think of ourselves as trendy, sophisticated, and quality orientated people.   A lot of the time when we read reviews it is hard to get a reading on what the person writing the review is like so if we share some of the same tastes in life this could be helpful to you.  OH I ALMOST FORGOT DON’T FORGET ABOUT THE JEWELRY AT KARENCURTIS.COM TO COMPLETE YOUR LOOK, YOUR BRIDESMAIDS AND THE MOMS OF THE NEWLY WEDS!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for reading and we wish you all the best with planning your wedding!

What’s Hot for Summer 2012

Loving some of the newest designs that will be coming out later this year!  This is an example of a spiked cuff bracelet that was one of the top sellers last season.  This year we are bringing in even more flavor with deep, rich colors and larger beads.  It kinda reminds me of a hybrid of 1980’s studs and spikes with fashion forward color trends.

There are many fashion and trend magazines, websites, and blogs that I look at every month just to keep a pulse on the industry.  In a recent article in http://www.millionlooks.com I ran across one of their write ups on jewelry trends spring/summer 2012 that made me feel very like-minded with the trend experts. It was this particularly that seemed important….”An outfit without a jewelry piece never looks finished. A delicate bracelet, luxurious necklace, exquisite earrings or even an unusual hairpin are small pieces which play such a big role in making our fashion looks. So, its essential to know as much about them as possible.”

Being informed is the best way to get the look you want.  Even though my blog may be small I am determined to bring what I know and what I do to my audiences eyes. We create the glitz, the glamour, the color and the sophistication all with Swarovski crystal, and build these elements into a wide range of designs.

Jewelry Design part 2

Great week of designing jewelry.  Karen and I stuck to 1 color combination all week-long, creating earrings, bracelets, and necklaces that all matched in color, but design-wise were slightly different.  I believe its important to have these differences, they make it more interesting when paired together.  Lets be honest, it’s the shine and the sparkle that attracts someone to look at what you are wearing.  And when they do the fascination comes from the colors and shapes that are paired together, Whether it is diamonds and rubies, or like we are using Swarovski crystal, the elegance and the craftsmanship come from thought-out placement of the individual elements.  After the actual colors choice of a piece, this would be the second most important aspect for designing a sophisticated piece of jewelry!  The following image is a brand new charm bracelet that can better explain what I am describing.  It is also a quick sneak peek of our spring 2012 and what’s to come this year from Karen Curtis!!!

The collection is meant to be dominated by the gold, honey, and amber colors that were selected, so here we brought in large transparent beads to stick out in the design of the bracelet.  It sort of sets the tone for the overall look of the piece.  Next we add in smaller beads to incorporate all of the colors.  Notice the stack of two oval red beads which break up the cone-shaped grey, amber, and olive beads.  Using our stacking method, and the pearl on the opposite side of the bracelet we add texture, different surfaces to each bead give us the opportunity to diversify the pattern.  The entire bracelet is wire-wrapped,  the metal is continuously woven into the next segment of metal.  Wire-wrapping is difficult but is a beautiful way of assembling certain pieces of our collections.

This collection would look stunning with an any outfit that incorporates tan, grey, or other neutral colors.  This could also be a beautiful and fun addition to summer-time carefree outfit with the dangling Swarovski crystals catching sunlight as you stroll down the beach.  We look forward to showcasing this collection at this years holiday fair in grand central terminal!   Enjoy your week,  stay tuned for another weekly blog!!!!!!!!
